Young was born Mar. 17, 1896. She graduated from the University of Chicago (Ph. B., 1918; A.M., 1923) and studied at the University of Florence. She taught Italian languages and literature at Smith College, 1925-1961. During that time she was a frequent director of Smith College's Junior Year in Italy.
